Practice Makes Perfect
I recently completed a week-long A Model A Day challenge, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. There are times where I start a design challenge, but life gets the best of me, and I don’t wind up finishing. Much like my Inktober attempt. A Blender3D modeling challenge, though? Sign me up!
A Model A Day
I Don’t quite remember how I stumbled on this Discord group, but I’m glad I did. Bi-weekly the admin posts a new series of challenges for the week, usually based on a theme. The rules are simple, simply create something original. This week it was simply letters of the alphabet.
The Process
I admit, I have a hard time coming up with original ideas for art pieces. In the past I used to think using other people’s art as reference was cheating, but as I have matured in my abilities, and explore more spaces for creative minds, I realize there isn’t really such a thing as an original idea. Humans have been borrowing ideas from each other since time immemorial. What we do have now, that we didn’t in the past, is Artificial Intelligence. I have no shame in admitting I used ChatGPT to generate images that I could use as reference for my models. If makes me a bad artist, then so be it. Just using the tools I have at my disposal.
The Tools
I’ve been struggling with Blender for roughly 4 years now, attempting to remember how to do that one thing, or where that one button was located. As I became more familiar with the program, I started exploring different add-ons that help make life a little easier. Some of the tools I used during this challenge include:
These tools saved me a TON of time on modeling, but cost more in terms of learning how to effectively use them. By the end of this challenge I felt much more comfortable with a few of them.
The Results
Without further ado, I present to you the end results. The best renders ever made? Absolutely not, but that’s not the point. The point is to practice, improving 1% each time. Hopefully see you on the Discord channel for the next Challenge!
